How to set up member verification on Discord

Fifty accounts join in a minute and start posting. Or one does, every night, with a new name each time. Verification puts a door in front of your server: new members see your rules and a Verify button, prove they are human, and only then see the rest. Here is how to set it up in SUPREO, which check to choose, and what to do with the accounts that never get through.

What verification is for

Discord's own verification level (a verified email, a waiting time, a phone number) filters accounts before they can talk. A verification step of your own does three more things:

How it works

A member who joins gets an unverified role that only sees your rules and a verification channel. They press Verify, pass the check you chose, lose the unverified role and receive the verified roles that open the rest of the server. If they never pass, you decide what happens: nothing, a kick, a ban, or a quarantine with a way to appeal.

Pick a method

Before you start

The setup, step by step

1

Create the unverified and verified roles

On the dashboard, open Verification and, under Roles, press Create it for me twice:

  • Unverified — created with no permissions and allowed to see the panel channel. Hiding your other channels from it is up to you: on each category, deny View Channel to the Unverified role. Categories pass it on to their channels.
  • Verified — created with no permissions. If your channels are open to everyone, members who pass simply stop being hidden from them; if they are locked, give the Verified role access.

You can pick existing roles instead, several of each if you like. Either way, drag the bot's role above them in Server Settings → Roles, or it cannot give or remove them.

2

Choose the method

Pick Click to pass, Discord captcha or Web check. For most servers the web check is the right start: it is free, it is the hardest to pass for a bot, and it unlocks alt detection later. Choose the Discord captcha if your members are wary of links, and Click to pass if all you want is for people to read the rules before talking.

3

Post the verification panel

Under Panel, press Create it for me for a #verification channel everyone can read but not write in, or pick your own. Write the title and text — {server} is replaced by your server's name — and set the button's label and colour.

  • Success message — what the member sees once they pass.
  • Log channel — every pass, punishment and appeal is posted there. Set one: held accounts and appeals are decided from the buttons on those cards.

Save, then press Post the panel.

4

Turn verification on

Turn on Enable verification and save. From now on, every member who joins gets the unverified role, and the panel does the rest. Members already on the server are not touched — see step 7.

5

Decide what happens to members who never pass

Turn on Act on members who do not verify and set a grace period (minutes to a day), a maximum of failed attempts, or both. With neither, nothing ever happens. Then the action:

  • Kick — removed; they can join again and verify.
  • Ban (Premium) — banned, recent messages removed.
  • Softban (Premium) — removed with recent messages wiped; can join again.
  • Quarantine (Premium) — every role is stripped, the quarantine roles are given, and the member gets an Appeal button by DM. Your staff decides from the log channel.

Add a reason shown to the member, and turn on Remind halfway through the grace period: a DM with the time left and a link to the panel brings back the people who simply forgot.

6

Harden it if you get raided

Leave these off at first; turn them on when a kind of attack shows up.

  • Minimum account age — younger accounts cannot start verifying, and are told when to come back.
  • Require a profile picture — Discord's default avatar is not accepted.
  • Adaptive check — risky accounts (young, or without an avatar) get a stronger method than your usual one; everyone else keeps the easy one.
  • Remember verified members — a member who passed and rejoins within the window is verified on the spot.
  • Alt detection (web check) — the page keeps a salted hash of the visitor's network for 30 days, never the address. A second account verifying from the same network is flagged in the log or held for review.
  • Blocked countries and Block Tor (web check) — for raids that come from one place. Real members on Tor are blocked too.
7

Bring current members in if you want

Apply to current members gives the unverified role to everyone without a verified role, so they go through the panel too. They are never removed automatically, even with punishments on. Skip this step if you only want to screen newcomers — most servers do.

8

Test with a second account

From an account that is not staff, join the server and check:

  • Only the rules and the verification channel are visible.
  • Verify works, the unverified role goes, the verified role comes, and the server opens.
  • The pass shows up in your log channel.

Day to day

The bottom of the Verification page lists members who have not passed yet and quarantined ones, with their flags — new account, no avatar, held as a possible alt, blocked — and three buttons: Verify, Kick, Ban. The same choices are on the cards in your log channel, and /verify member verifies someone by hand from Discord. Last 30 days sums it up: verified, removed, waiting, median time to verify and possible alts.

It works best with

Click to pass and the web check, with kick for members who never pass, are free. The Discord captcha, the adaptive check, ban, softban, quarantine and the hardening options are part of Premium. See pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Which verification method should I use?

Start with the web check: it is free, it is the strongest, and it is the only one with alt detection and country blocks. Use Click to pass if you only want members to read the rules before talking, and the Discord captcha if your members dislike opening links.

Does verification affect members who are already on the server?

No. Only members who join after you turn it on are asked to verify. Apply to current members puts everyone without a verified role through it, and they are never removed automatically, even with punishments on.

What does the web check store?

The page keeps no cookies and no account. For alt detection it keeps a salted hash of the visitor's network for 30 days, never the address itself. SUPREO records that the member passed.

A real member was flagged as an alt. What now?

Alt detection matches members who verify from the same network — shared housing, a school, a mobile carrier. Press Verify on the Waiting to verify list or the log card. If it happens often, switch from Hold for review to Flag it in the log.

How do I verify someone by hand?

Use /verify member in Discord, or the Verify button on the Waiting to verify list. It also bypasses the minimum account age and the profile-picture requirement.

Is verification free?

Yes: Click to pass and the web check, with kick for members who never pass. The Discord captcha, the adaptive check, ban, softban, quarantine and the hardening options are part of Premium.

Put a door in front of your server

Add the bot, sign in with Discord, and have new members verify before they can post.

Next: catch the hacked accounts that verification cannot see with a honeypot channel.
